LANQUEDOC HOUSING PROJECT  print this page

The Lanquedoc Housing Project (LHP) evolved from an Anglo American Farms Limited (AAF) review process that started in 1990 in order to identify the strategic direction for AAF in the 21st century.

The review focused on four main areas

  1. business growth and profitability;
  2. farming practices;
  3. the environment and heritage; and
  4. social issues.

It became apparent that housing, and in particular the home ownership aspirations of the workforce, needed special attention. 445 new houses were built during 2003 and 166 existing houses in Lanquedoc utilised at a total project cost of R54m. AAF contributed approximately R35m towards the project. This excludes the costs of land and houses donated by AAF.

In 2004, the new home owners celebrated the move into their homes in the Groot Drakenstein Valley of the Western Cape. These 611 families received their new homes at no cost to themselves.

In 2010, the Lanquedoc Housing Project is still ongoing with landscaping in the process of being finalised.
