Environmental Project

Investing in the future through sustainable farming and land rehabilitation ... Vergelegen is situated in one of the richest floral regions of the world and in 2004 started a 10 year alien clearing programme to restore 2240 hectares of the Estate to a pristine example of the Cape’s natural flora and fauna.

The project is considered the biggest private project of its kind in South Africa and aimed at combating alien and invasive plant infestation and nurturing the return of natural vegetation, wetlands, birds and animals. 140 hectares of this land is Renosterveld of which only 4% remains in South Africa due to unsustainable farming practices.

Worker training, local job creation, scientific research and learner education are all part of this ambitious project.
