2010-08-16 : A glimpse behind the scenes with Don Tooth, MD of Vergelegen

Don Tooth shares his passion and his jovial attitude towards life. On a private tour of his 'own territory' which – surprisingly – is not limited to wine only... we find out why Don thinks Camellias are sexy and why he sneaks out into The Library on a Sunday morning before the gates open...

Don is not only the MD of Vergelegen, but also has the singular privilege, which is shared by few, of living on the Estate.

He delights in riding his mountain bike on The Estate's dusty farm tracks with the Helderberg Hottentots Holland Mountains in the backdrop. Here he can soak up nature's abundance of colour and fragrances. One morning, instead of concluding his exhilarating ride at the refreshing Lourens River, as he normally does, he stopped at The Library only to leave much later, just before the first visitors arrived. There Don discovered a particular interest, and not the obvious literary one.

He is a man of harmony and he refers to The Library as his sanctuary because here, on a Sunday morning, he can lose himself, quietly playing ... billiards. Don, all alone, immensely enjoys the timelessness of The Library on his own. Over the centuries, a huge amount of work has gone into this beautiful building, yet it looks as if it has always been there exactly as it is now. It in no way imposes. To Don, its air of tranquility offers him a great personal space in which to meditate and reflect on life.

Work-wise Don sees himself as an orchestra conductor: he paves the way for everyone to make sure they can achieve their very best. He likes to give his team space, which he too needs to keep everything in perspective.

Don has been living and working at Vergelegen for more than 10 years and continues to be amazed by how the various aspects of Vergelegen create a sense of unity, which many a visitor to The Estate appreciates. He believes it allows us to experience that wholeness in ourselves. It gives him great pleasure to watch a visitor will look around slowly and stop to take in the beauty in awe. Don compares this with the lovers' table where two people don't speak a word, but their eyes say it all.

Don is a poet in disguise. His passion for Vergelegen is contagious and if you were ever to see him on The Estate, don't hesitate to stop and have a chat. Ask him about his hobbyhorse: the Camellias. Do they remind him of Coco Chanel? Not really. To many people, this French fashion queen of a bygone era conjures up images of white Camellias and ... the little black dress.

In Chanel's hands a Camellia became a necklace, a watch, a hat, a detail on a button or simply a silk flower on an ultra minimalistic dress. Like the lotus in Buddhism, the Camellia expressed for Chanel a shape with infinite possibilities. It is clear to all who know Don that Vergelegen has the same effect on him as the Camellia had on Chanel: a myriad of delightful experiences waiting to be enjoyed by as many as possible.

Speaking of shared experiences. Perhaps it is time for a well seasoned adversary to challenge Don at The Library's billiard table? It is a great way to relax and could be a great excuse to celebrate winning with a bottle of wine. The trouble is, Don doesn't have a favourite wine. He loves them all! So celebrate the victory with any one of the many wines of Vergelegen, from the easy approachable Cabernet / Merlot to the intense and sensual Vergelegen V.
