01 Jan 2008 : VERGELEGEN CELEBRATES GLOBAL BEST OF WINE TOURISM AWARD - AGAIN

Vergelegen Wine Estate is South Africa’s winner in the Great Wine Capitals Global Network Best of Wine Tourism Awards for the second successive year.

The annual awards recognise wineries in eight of the world's wine capitals which demonstrate exceptional capabilities to cater for and welcome visitors and tourists.

There were over 300 entries from wineries and wine tourism businesses in Melbourne, Bordeaux, Bilbao-Rioja, Porto, San Francisco, Florence, Mendoza and Cape Town. Entries are judged across six national categories before an international jury selects a global winner for each of the network cities.

“Of course we're tremendously pleased to be rated alongside some of the best estates in the world again. But for us the importance of this awards programme is that it encourages and recognises wineries which invest in their historic, cultural and natural heritage and share these with visitors,” says Don Tooth, CEO of Vergelegen.

Besides being the global award winner for Cape Town, Vergelegen also won in two national categories. These were art and culture and providing a significant wine tourism experience. It has previously won in two other national categories, architecture and gardens and grounds.

The historic Helderberg estate is one of the country's oldest, having been founded in 1700 by Willem Adriaan van der Stel. It is known for its award-winning wines, but has also been recognised for its environmental initiatives and maintaining its extensive 18th century gardens, historic buildings and library.

Notes to editors:

Cape Town has been a member of the Great Wine Capitals Network since 2003. The other members are Bilbao-Rioja (Spain), Bordeaux (France), Florence (Italy), Melbourne (Australia), Mendoza (Argentina), Porto (Portugal) and San Francisco - Napa Valley (US).  The six national categories in which wineries were judged are: parks, gardens and environment, architecture, conference and conventions, significant wine tourism, accommodation and wine tourism services.
